Prof. Dr. Willy Spaan

Ex-Chairman LUMC

Willy Spaan (1954) was Chairman of the Executive Board of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) until June 2020. He is chairman of the supervisory board of Ipse de Bruggen, member of the supervisory board of De Hoogstraat Rehabilitation and of the Martini Hospital. Before that, he was Chairman of the Executive Board of Jeroen Bosch Hospital from 2007. He was also a member of the Health Valley board and chairman of the ZonMw Committee on safety in healthcare.

Before joining the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in 2007, Spaan was Head of Medical Microbiology at the LUMC and chair of one of the five LUMC divisions. Spaan completed his training and promotion (cum laude) at Utrecht University. In 1990 he was appointed professor of Virology at the LUMC, a position he still holds today. Spaan was Care Manager of the Year in 2014. Until 2009, Spaan was a director at ZonMw.
